McKinney backs free clinic's move with $306,000 grant
The MCDC approved $306,348 for CommonGood Medical's new Virginia Parkway clinic, less than the $447,677 requested after some costs were ruled ineligible.
The McKinney Community Development Corporation voted August 27 to give CommonGood Medical $306,348.08 to help renovate a building at 2750 Virginia Parkway for its expanding clinic. The board cut the award from the $447,677.25 the clinic asked for after staff and legal review found some project costs did not qualify for the money.
The grant helps a clinic that treats people with little financial cushion. CommonGood Medical serves uninsured McKinney residents, and its expansion will add imaging, counseling and optometry to a larger space.
The money comes from the MCDC, a city corporation funded by a half-cent sales tax McKinney voters approved in 1996. The grant covers exterior infrastructure like parking, walkways, ADA improvements, and mechanical, electrical, plumbing and HVAC work. The corporation pays grants as reimbursements, so CommonGood must show the work was done and paid for before it gets the funds.
At the August meeting, Chair George Fuller confirmed the clinic had been told which parts of its request were not eligible before the board approved the smaller amount. The original $447,677.25 request represented 11% of the total project cost; the reduced grant is a smaller share.
CommonGood Medical bought a 9,000-square-foot building for the project. As of June 30, 2026, the clinic reported 3,794 patients enrolled, 22,999 patient visits and more than 30,000 volunteer hours since it opened in 2017.
The work comes in two phases. Phase One, which began in January 2026, adds primary care, specialty clinics, optometry, counseling and staff space, and is expected to finish in September 2026. Phase Two, running through December 2026, adds X-ray, ultrasound and mammography under the name CommonGood Imaging.
CommonGood expects to complete Phase One by September 2026 and Phase Two by December 2026. Residents can follow the clinic’s progress at commongoodmedical.org.
