McKinney library board takes up plan to meet less often
The Library Advisory Board found its schedule broke a city rule and set a vote on meeting less often for August 20.
McKinney’s Library Advisory Board was set to vote August 20 on how often it meets, after learning its current schedule did not follow city rules.
The board advises the city on its public library system. How often it meets shapes how often residents can weigh in on library matters in person.
At its July 16 meeting, the board was told its schedule “does not align with the meeting frequency and location requirements outlined in Section 50-38 of the City of McKinney Code of Ordinances,” according to the minutes. That section says the board must hold bimonthly meetings (every two months) at a library in the McKinney Public Library System. The board has been meeting in the City Hall Council Chambers.
Library Director Spencer Smith laid out options for meeting less often, including quarterly or every other month starting in January, the minutes say. Board members discussed the choices and “expressed support for reducing the frequency of regular meetings.”
The board agreed to bring the question back as an action item in August. The August 20 agenda lists that item, described as “Consider/Discuss/Act on the Frequency of Library Advisory Board Meetings as Related to City Ordinance.”
The July meeting drew no public comment. Vice Chair Lisa Harris ran the meeting; Chair Beth Beck and member Michelle Buggs were absent.
The outcome of the August 20 vote was not available in the meeting documents. 1848 Square will report the result once minutes are posted; they and the meeting record can be found via the Legistar calendar.
